In the following you may read a short portrait about Heraeus Medical written by Teresa Arrieta:
Developing resorbable implants for children
As a family-run business established 155 years ago, Heraeus is a company active worldwide, working in the fields of precious metals and technology, with deep roots in the German location. The group division Heraeus Medical is a leader in the production of bone cements and biomaterials for orthopaedic and trauma surgery. Within the framework of the Laura Bassi Centre of Excellence BRIC, the company will provide its know-how in the area of anti-infective coating solutions and resorbable materials. Researching synthetic bone replacement materials, Heraeus banks on a future technology: “Especially with regard to the treatment of fractures in children and youths, the development of resorbable implants is important, so as to spare the young patients another operation”, explains Dr Klaus-Dieter Kühn, Senior Scientific Advisor at Heraeus Medical.
The Laura Bassi Programme guarantees long-term connection between the university and the industry
The innovative Laura Bassi Programme design with its emphasis on equal opportunities, management skills, personnel development and interdisciplinarity is particularly valued by Heraeus on account of the well-directed promotion of young scientists it provides. “We focus on equal opportunities and tolerance in our company, too”, says Klaus-Dieter Kühn. Heraeus has been supporting a European female mentoring network for five years, for instance. The positive effect of the mentoring on the careers of the participants has been verified by a recently completed external evaluation including an alumni survey. Heraeus also counts on more efficient use of the networks of both the university and the industry as a result of the Laura Bassi Programme. “Heraeus can raise its profile with such projects and reinforce its image as a potential employer of young scientists.” The university is interesting for Heraeus both as a talent pool for the promotion of young scientists and as a development partner. “The closeness to medical and surgical users allows us to generate a multitude of new ideas and to develop further research projects that will connect the university with the industry in the long term”, says Klaus-Dieter Kühn.
