Proteins for vaccine development

Intercell has specialised in the development of so-called “smart vaccines”. As they consist of only the strictly necessary ingredients they can stimulate both aspects of the immune system: T cells and B cells. Intercell focuses especially on protein-based vaccines. Within the scope of the Laura Bassi Centre COSS the teams from Intercell will drive the molecular biological protein analysis forward exploring new methods of protein expression and purification, especially for membrane and membrane-associated proteins. Markus Hanner, Team Leader for the expression and purification of recombinant proteins at Intercell, considers COSS to be providing new economic opportunities for Intercell: “Ideally, the methods to be developed will make the industrial production of protein-based vaccines more efficient.” Intercell considers the innovative Laura Bassi Programme design with its focus on equal opportunities, interdisciplinarity, management skills and personnel development an “approach with considerable potential”: “Most of our staff are female. Women do research differently from men. The way they tackle problems is more intuitive and more creative. These qualities are very important in science”, says Markus Hanner. “And the Laura Bassi Centre pushes resource management, which is great for our cooperation, too, because management skills are essential in research these days.”
