Bacterial ghosts for vaccines: a new platform technology

The research company BIRD-C (Biotech Innovation Research Development Company) has specialised in the development of a new class of effective and safe vaccines. Over many years of research, an innovative platform technology based on so-called bacterial ghosts has been developed: empty, lifeless bacterial shells that can be filled with vaccines. BIRD-C considers the Laura Bassi Centre OCUVAC to have both scientific and economic potential: vaccines of the future must be specifically tailored to the affected target group, absolutely safe to use and, most of all, easy to administer. To check the spread of infectious diseases in developing and threshold countries, a vaccine is most useful if it can be stored at any temperature, be self-administered and be used both as prophylaxis and as treatment. In order to achieve these goals, large networks must work together in an optimum fashion.

Research makes equal opportunities become a reality

BIRD-C considers the establishment of the Laura Bassi Centres of Expertise with their research culture based on management and equal opportunities as a sign of enhanced cooperation between industry and science. “Our cooperation with universities and industrial partners has shown us the value of interdisciplinary, team-oriented work”, says managing director Dr Petra Lubitz. Industrial feasibility is crucial for application-oriented scientific projects. “Science works across borders and should take on a pioneering role in making equal opportunities become a reality, it should promote career development and work in a team-oriented way.” As BIRD-C is a company with a scientific background, it considers itself committed to these issues.
